Opposition politician David Smolansky, who has relocated to the United States due to threats from Maduros government, stated his belief that the regime will crack soon, reflecting widespread public desire for change. According to Smolansky, nine out of ten Venezuelans want Maduro to leave office and he expects a political transition to happen imminently.
Smolansky is a key advisor to Maria Corina Machado, a prominent opposition leader and the Nobel Peace Prize laureate of 2025. Opposition figures maintain continuous and fluid communication with U.S. authorities regarding Venezuelas political future, underscoring the international dimension of the oppositions strategy and hopes.
Tensions have recently escalated between the U.S. and Venezuela. The U.S. launched a series of strikes on vessels accused of drug trafficking, which prompted Venezuela to conduct military exercises broadcast on state television. Additionally, the U.S. is expanding its largest military presence in the Caribbean in decades by deploying warships to counter alleged drug trafficking through the region.
Despite being indicted in the U.S. on charges of narco-trafficking and subject to a $50 million reward for his capture, Maduro continues to defy both the General Election results from the previous year and mounting international pressure to relinquish power.
The Venezuelan oppositions optimism remains high as they coordinate closely with external allies, notably the United States, to seek a resolution to the prolonged political crisis and humanitarian challenges engulfing the country.
