Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the feared leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed by Mexican security forces on February 22, 2026, during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco state. The 59-year-old cartel leader was wounded in the raid and died while being transported to Mexico City.
The military operation faced intense gunfire, resulting in the deaths of four individuals on site, including El Mencho, and the injury of three others who later died. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged citizens to remain calm and reassured the public that most areas had returned to normal and no civilian casualties had been reported in the incident’s aftermath.
El Mencho co-founded the Jalisco New Generation Cartel around 2007–2009, turning it into Mexico’s most powerful and violent criminal organization over the ensuing decades. His death is seen as a significant blow to the CJNG’s leadership and structure, potentially creating a power vacuum that could lead to further instability and increased violence.
